A Stitchist guide

Free embroidery digitizing software: choose the right workflow

Stitchist is a practical choice for free online embroidery digitizing when you want to draw, add lettering, preview stitches and export PES or DST without installing software. The separate stitch-file converter offers all eight outputs free with an account. Auto Digitize includes one free design; unlimited automatic digitizing requires Pro.

Choose by the job you need to finish

The best fit depends on your starting point. An image needs digitizing, an existing stitch file may only need conversion, and a design at the wrong physical size needs resizing. Choosing the right workflow avoids paying for a feature you do not need or expecting a converter to invent stitches.

Stitchist brings these tasks into a browser workflow. It is particularly useful when you need to work across Windows, Mac or Chromebook, create names and monograms, or inspect a file before transferring it to a machine.

What is free in Stitchist?

  • Studio drawing and node editing, with satin, fill and running-stitch workflows.
  • Lettering with the included satin and fill font libraries.
  • Stitch preview and direct Studio export to PES and DST.
  • One free Auto Digitize creation to try the image workflow.
  • Conversion of existing stitch files to PES, DST, JEF, EXP, VP3, U01, PEC and XXX; a free account is needed to download.

When Pro becomes useful

Pro is a one-time $50 purchase. It adds unlimited Auto Digitize, custom TTF/OTF uploads, additional direct Studio export formats, unlimited cloud projects and version history. The pricing page is the current reference for plan details.

If your only task is changing an existing PES to JEF, the free converter is enough. If you routinely create new designs from artwork or need editable saved projects with history, Pro addresses a different need.

How to evaluate the result

Try a small design at the size you actually plan to sew. Check lettering, overlaps, color changes and the export. A polished preview is useful for inspection, but it does not simulate fabric stretch, thread tension or stabilizer behavior.

Compare tools using your own final-size artwork and machine workflow. A promise of perfect automatic results for every image is not a useful substitute for inspecting and test-stitching a design.

Common questions

Is Stitchist free forever?
The free plan includes ongoing manual editing and PES/DST export. The automatic digitizing offer is one free creation, not unlimited free Auto Digitize.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Studio runs in a web browser, with processing on Stitchist's servers. An internet connection is required.
Is it the best software for every embroiderer?
No single tool fits every workflow. Stitchist suits browser-based editing, lettering and accessible file conversion; highly specialized machine workflows and complex artwork still need careful evaluation.
