A Stitchist guide

Free embroidery file conversion, step by step

Stitchist's embroidery file converter reads existing stitch files and writes PES, DST, JEF, EXP, VP3, U01, PEC or XXX. Upload and preview without an account, then sign in free to download. All eight converter outputs are free; this is separate from Studio's export-plan limits.

Prepare the file you actually received

If the design arrived as a ZIP, extract it and select a machine embroidery file inside. A PDF color chart, preview picture or source image is not the stitch file. Preserve the original extension to help identify formats without a unique header.

Keep a copy of the original. The stitch-file upload limit is 10 MiB, and the converter produces one selected output at a time.

Pick the destination from your machine manual

PES, DST, JEF, EXP, VP3, U01, PEC and XXX serve different workflows. Brand names are useful hints, but the exact model, format version and embroidery area determine whether your machine can use the result.

The converter does not change the size. A design that is too large for the receiving hoop needs a separate size adjustment.

Inspect the written output

The result shows a stitch preview, stitch count, colors and measurements read from the converted file. Compare those with your reference. Coordinate rounding and long-stitch splitting can alter the count without implying that a whole design section vanished.

DST, EXP and U01 do not carry RGB thread colors in this workflow. Palette-limited formats can also display approximate colors. Retain the original chart.

Download while the result is available

A free account is needed for the download. Conversion runs on Stitchist's server. Results normally remain available for 30 minutes, but a restart or temporary-storage limit can end that period sooner.

Save the converted file and inspect it in the receiving machine's workflow. If the temporary result has expired, convert the original file again.
