A Stitchist guide
Convert DST to EXP online
Use Stitchist's free embroidery file converter to convert an existing DST stitch file to EXP. Upload the original file, select EXP, inspect the written result and download it with a free account. Conversion changes the machine-file encoding; it does not re-digitize the artwork or rebuild stitch density.

Step by step
Start with the original file
Choose the .dst embroidery file. Extract it first if it is in a ZIP. Keep the original extension; changing a filename is not conversion.
Select EXP
Open the Stitchist converter and choose EXP in the output selector. The link on this page selects it for you. Upload the file, then click Convert.
Inspect the converted result
Compare the displayed width, height, stitch count and color sequence. The preview is read from the written output, not just copied from the input.
Download and check at the machine
Sign in or create a free account to download the .exp file. Save it promptly: temporary results normally expire after 30 minutes and can disappear sooner after a restart. Check the file in your machine's workflow before sewing.
When to convert DST to EXP
Both the source DST and standalone EXP are color-poor delivery formats. Keep the original stop list and artwork reference. The useful check is the sequence of stitched sections and dimensions, not a match between arbitrary preview colors.
What your DST file contains
DST is a stitch format widely used in commercial embroidery workflows. It describes needle movements and color changes rather than a complete editable artwork project. It is useful when a shop requests a DST, but the receiving machine still needs the right hoop and thread setup.
DST does not carry RGB thread colors. Stitchist shows sample colors and preserves the decoded color-change sequence; use a separate thread chart to choose the actual threads.
What to check in the EXP result
EXP stores an embroidery stitch sequence. It is used in Melco workflows and by some BERNINA machines, but the surrounding files expected by a particular machine can differ. Stitchist's converter downloads a single EXP stitch file.
Some BERNINA workflows use additional color or preview companion files. This converter does not create a BERNINA USB bundle, so check your machine manual before relying on a lone EXP.
A standalone EXP does not carry RGB thread colors in this workflow. The preview uses sample colors; retain your reference image and thread sequence.
What changes, and what does not
Stitchist converts the decoded stitch sequence. The destination format may round coordinates, split a long stitch into smaller movements, or encode trims and stops differently. A slightly different stitch count is not by itself proof of a damaged design.
The converter does not resize the design, regenerate a fill, repair weak digitizing or restore object editing. Compare dimensions and sewing order, and keep the original file as your reference.
- When a shop asks for EXP, confirm whether it wants only the stitch file or a package with companion files. Keep any original companion files with the original design.
- Use the machine manual to confirm format, version and embroidery-area support.
- For a design you plan to sell or repeat, test the final size on the intended fabric and stabilizer.
If the file is rejected
The input must be an embroidery file, not a PNG, JPEG, PDF or ZIP renamed to .dst. Use Auto Digitize for artwork. If a valid original file is not recognized, provide its original format when asked or re-export it from the source software. The stitch-file upload limit is 10 MiB.
Do not cycle through unrelated source-format hints. That can decode the wrong bytes without producing a trustworthy design.
