A Stitchist guide

Why embroidery colors change after conversion

A converted embroidery file can show different colors because the destination stores colors differently or the source never included them. DST, EXP and U01 do not carry RGB thread colors in Stitchist's converter. JEF and PEC use limited palettes. Check the original thread chart before treating a color difference as missing stitches.

Separate three kinds of information

The stitch geometry describes where the needle moves. Color-change commands separate stages of the sequence. RGB or thread-palette information describes how software displays those stages. A format can retain the sequence while omitting exact display colors.

If an entire stitched region is missing, that is a different question from a region being shown in blue instead of black. Inspect the actual paths and sequence.

What happens with DST, EXP and U01

These formats do not provide RGB thread colors in this workflow, so the reader assigns sample colors. Converting one to a color-capable format cannot reconstruct the missing original palette.

Use the original design image or thread chart to assign physical threads. A colorful destination preview is not evidence that the original colors were recovered.

What happens with limited palettes

When a destination uses a restricted palette, a source color can be mapped to an approximate entry. Similar shades are especially worth checking.

Keep the original file and avoid unnecessary conversion round trips. Once a color has been approximated, a later format change cannot reliably infer the original value.

Make the handoff clear

Provide a numbered thread sequence and final dimensions with the machine file. Check the sequence at the receiving machine and assign needles or thread changes according to the intended colors.

If the shape or sewing order also changed, retain both files and describe the specific difference when reporting the issue.

Common questions

Does a gray preview mean the design has no colors?
It may mean the file has no stored RGB palette. Check whether separate color-change stages exist and consult the thread chart.
Can PES restore the original colors of a DST?
No. A PES can store colors, but a DST does not supply the missing original RGB values.
Should I rename the extension to fix colors?
No. Renaming does not change file contents or recover missing information.
