A Stitchist guide
Convert a SEW embroidery file online
Stitchist can read SEW embroidery files and convert them to PES, DST, JEF, EXP, VP3, U01, PEC or XXX. Converting and previewing are free; download with a free account. SEW is an input format here, not an available output.

Check colors, dimensions and machine compatibility.Step by step
Start with the original file
Choose the .sew embroidery file. Extract it first if it is in a ZIP. Keep the original extension; changing a filename is not conversion.
Select PES
Open the Stitchist converter and choose PES in the output selector. The link on this page selects it for you. Upload the file, then click Convert.
Inspect the converted result
Compare the displayed width, height, stitch count and color sequence. The preview is read from the written output, not just copied from the input.
Download and check at the machine
Sign in or create a free account to download the .pes file. Save it promptly: temporary results normally expire after 30 minutes and can disappear sooner after a restart. Check the file in your machine's workflow before sewing.
Working with SEW
SEW is used in older embroidery workflows. Before moving to JEF, confirm your destination machine supports JEF and check that the design fits its hoop.
This format is associated with Janome and Elna. Check the receiving machine's accepted format and hoop instead of relying on a brand name alone.
Select a supported output
Choose PES for a compatible Brother/Baby Lock workflow, JEF for a compatible Janome model, or one of the other outputs your machine explicitly supports. The converter does not resize or re-digitize the design.
Some formats preserve a palette while others omit thread RGB colors. Keep the original chart and compare the output's dimensions and color sequence.
If the reader cannot open the file
Keep the original .sew extension, extract ZIP downloads, and ask the sender for the original format if uncertain. A screenshot or PDF renamed to .sew is not a stitch file. Re-exporting from the source software can help with an incomplete or damaged file.
