A Stitchist guide

Why your embroidery machine will not read a file

If a machine will not list or load an embroidery design, check the exact supported format and version, the design dimensions, the transfer method and whether you extracted the actual stitch file from its ZIP. A correct extension does not guarantee every other machine requirement is satisfied.

A little preparation makes a better stitch file.

Check the real file type

A ZIP is a package, a PDF may be a chart, and a PNG is a picture. Extract and select the actual embroidery file. Renaming a picture or a different binary format to .pes does not make it readable.

Confirm that the machine accepts the chosen format. Stitchist writes PES version 6; older models may have different version requirements. Some EXP workflows expect companion files that the standalone converter does not generate.

Compare dimensions with the usable hoop

The design can exceed the machine's embroidery area even if the file type is supported. Check width and height in millimeters, including any outlying stitches.

Changing the file format does not shrink the design. Use the source project or a reviewed resize if it needs a different size.

Follow the machine's transfer procedure

Check the machine manual for USB requirements, folder location, filename rules and any machine-specific software steps. A file saved somewhere on a drive may not appear in the location the machine reads.

Try a known-good design using the same transfer process to distinguish a design issue from a drive or workflow issue.

Report a reproducible problem

Keep the original and converted files. Note the machine model, requested output, design dimensions and exact error. Explain whether the converter rejected the upload, the preview was wrong, or the machine refused the downloaded result.

Those are different failure points and require different fixes. Avoid repeatedly changing extensions without preserving a trustworthy original.

Common questions

Will converting to DST make every machine read it?
No. DST is widely used, but the exact model and design limits still matter.
Can a correct preview guarantee machine compatibility?
No. The machine can impose additional format-version, hoop, stitch-count or transfer requirements.
Can the converter generate BERNINA companion files?
It downloads a standalone EXP when EXP is selected, not a full BERNINA USB bundle.
