A Stitchist guide

Prepare artwork for Auto Digitize

Start Auto Digitize with clean artwork, distinct color regions and a realistic final size. Remove unwanted backgrounds, simplify tiny details and inspect the trace before creating stitches. A higher-resolution image helps only when it contains useful detail rather than enlarged blur.

From idea to embroidery

Draw · Digitize · Sew

A little preparation makes a better stitch file.

Choose the best source

Use the original image or vector export when available. A screenshot can introduce compression, unwanted borders and soft edges. For logos, distinct shapes and deliberate colors are easier to interpret than gradients and textured backgrounds.

Stitchist accepts supported PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, BMP and SVG artwork in Auto Digitize. Export other formats to a supported one rather than changing their extensions.

Separate the design from its background

Inspect transparency and any white background. A background that looks harmless on screen can become a large filled region. Conversely, a white highlight inside an eye may be an intentional part of the design.

Review what is actually selected in the trace. Keep intended holes and interior details while excluding the surrounding canvas.

Judge detail in millimeters

Set the approximate finished size before deciding whether a detail is necessary. Small letters, narrow gaps and tiny islands can be obvious at high zoom but difficult to sew cleanly.

Reduce detail deliberately: simplify the silhouette, increase the size of an essential highlight, or use line work where a tiny fill would add bulk. Do not rely on more colors to solve a scale problem.

Review the trace, then the stitches

The trace stage answers whether the objects match the artwork. The stitch stage answers whether those objects have useful stitch types and a workable sequence. Check both before export.

Keep the untouched original alongside the prepared image. If you later change size or simplify a region, you can compare what was intentionally removed.

Common questions

Is SVG always better than PNG?
Not automatically. A clean supported SVG gives useful geometry, but missing fonts, gradients or effects can change its appearance. A clean PNG can be a better input than a complicated SVG.
Should I keep adding colors until every pixel matches?
Use the colors needed to describe the design. Extra shades from compression or antialiasing can create unnecessary objects and thread changes.
