A Stitchist guide
Turn an image into an embroidery file
To turn an image into an embroidery file, create stitch paths from the artwork, inspect them at the intended size and export a format your machine accepts. Stitchist offers Auto Digitize with one free creation, along with manual drawing and editing. The file converter is for existing stitches, not images.

A little preparation makes a better stitch file.Use the original artwork
A crisp PNG, JPEG or supported SVG is easier to evaluate than a small screenshot. Auto Digitize also accepts supported WebP, GIF and BMP images. Export PDF or HEIC artwork as PNG or JPEG first; changing its extension does not convert it.
A picture can contain transparency, background noise, gradients and details that are smaller than a practical thread mark. Decide which elements matter before tracing.
Choose an automatic or manual start
For flat artwork with distinct regions, Auto Digitize can produce editable objects quickly. Review the trace, work through suggestions, choose stitch types for important objects and confirm the colors before creating.
Manual drawing gives you control when the original is ambiguous or the trace has too many small pieces. You can trace only the necessary shapes and use line work where a thin filled region would be awkward.
Review at the final size
Check eyes, lettering, corners and gaps at the size you intend to sew. A result can match the image at high screen magnification and still contain details that are too small in thread.
Use the stitch sequence to inspect coverage and travel. Keep the reference image separate from the stitch preview so you can tell which marks are actually stitched.
Choose your delivery format
Studio exports PES and DST on the free plan. Pro adds the other direct machine exports and unlimited Auto Digitize. If you already have a completed PES or DST, the separate converter can write any of its eight supported outputs free with an account.
Keep the source project and original image. For a future resize or lettering edit, those are more useful than a machine file alone.
